The Most Popular Baby Shampoo

If you've ever researched the ingredient list of Johnson & Johnson, the most iconic baby shampoo in the universe, you're totally smart to dig deeper for a shampoo that won't harm the health of your precious little one.

My mom used Johnson's on me and, admittedly, I used it on my babies (WAY back when they were babies) because ... who knew?! Who knew the fragrance alone can cause allergies, immunotoxicity, organ system toxicity and more?

What You Put On Your Baby's Skin Affects Their Health

In case you didn't know, what you put on your child's skin, good or bad, leaches into their skin, into their bloodstream and then creeps into their little tiny organs. Occasional invasion of harmful chemicals may never make a noticeable difference, but over time, continued use of toxic products can take their toll and cause a large array of health problems including everything from brain development to hormone disruption to cancer. It's no joke what you introduce to your baby's skin and body, and that's not even considering how much bath water your toddler decides to drink!

Your Kids Are So Lucky They Have You!

Lucky for babies these days, they were born in an era with far more awareness of the chemicals lurking in seemingly innocent products. And the fact that you are here means you are proactively doing your parental best for your child's health. Yay for you!

Johnson Removes Formaldehyde & 1,4 Dioxane

In defense of Johnson & Johnson Baby Shampoo, in 2014, pressure from consumers and environmental groups spurred Johnson removed Formaldehyde and 1,4 Dioxane from their baby shampoo formula. Yeah you read that right. Formaldehyde. I can't even fathom how a chemical used in pesticides and embalming dead people could ever be in a product that gets slathered all over infants. But kudos to Johnson's for removing it . . . albeit very quietly, as if this hideous "ingredient" were never there to begin with. Leave it to The New York Times to inform us about the removal of these chemicals. (To date Johnson's Baby Shampoo rates 4 on the EWG Skin Deep Database. 10 is the most toxic rating, so a 4 is not horrendous, but not great either.)

Burt's Bees Baby Bee Shampoo & Wash, Fragrance Free

EWG Rating - 1
Fakespot Grade - A
  Super trustworthy Amazon reviews

Burt's Bees Baby Bee delivers just what you need to get your baby squeaky clean and all smelly good without stinging their eyes. Great for little ones with sensitive skin.

Amazon Review Quotes

All 3 of my kids have pretty sensitive skin. After a few weeks of research and learning about the ingredients in almost all popular name brand kid shampoos and body washes, I refused to use those products any further. After testing several brands and products, this shampoo/wash was the product for us! In my opinion it does the job better than all products out there on the market. Skin stays nice and hydrated.
I love the smell and it's a true tear free. I use this for my newborn and it is not abrasive at all for his skin.
I love this shampoo/baby wash. My baby has very sensitive skin. Johnson & Johnson baby wash irritates her skin. Burts Bees is wonderful. She comes out smelling great, her skin does not get irritated, and since it is 99.9% natural, I don't worry as much when she tries to drink her bath water.

Natures Baby Organics Shampoo & Body Wash, Vanilla Tangerine (2 PACK)

EWG Rating - 1
Fakespot Grade - B

Snuggle up with your just bathed little one and take in a wiff of their yummy Vanilla Tangerine-ness. Mmmmmm!! Parents say it foams well, softens skin and hair and is great for sensitive skin, including eczema. They also like the price point for this high quality product, particularly with this 2 Pack of 16 oz bottles.

Amazon Review Quotes

I've been using this on my boys for quite a while now. We switched because my oldest son's (3 yrs old) hair would get really dry and brittle after washing with J & J. After doing some research, I couldn't believe the horrible chemicals that I've been bathing him in since birth. We switched to this and we instantly noticed a difference. His hair wasn't dry and brittle and his skin wasn't so dry after a bath. My youngest son has really sensitive skin and bad eczema and this works great for him too.
This is a fantastic product. It foams well, it smells amazing and it leaves the hair very soft and manageable. Best of all, the ingredients list is impressive at the right price.
I love this shampoo for my kids! It smells so fantastic, and finally, a shampoo/body wash that isn't lavender! This is the only shampoo I use for my kids since trying it. The price is fantastic for the quality.

California Baby Calming Shampoo & Bodywash

EWG Rating - 1
Fakespot Grade - A
 Super trustworthy Amazon reviews

Got cradle cap? Multiple reviewers rave that this shampoo did the trick. Need to ward off lice? The Tea tree oil in this shampoo will be your new best friend for that too. Tea tree fights bacteria, heals skin issues and more. One mom successfully tested the "tear free" claim on her own eyes, and others say it smells great, lathers and leaves skin super smoooooth.

Amazon Review Quotes

If I could give this 6 stars I would. I bought this because my 4 month old baby boy had some residual cradle cap and after taking him to his 4 month check up I asked his dr what to do and she said I could do nothing . . . I stumbled upon this shampoo . . . and after the first use his cradle cap was gone. Added bonus - it smells soooo nice!
This brand is safe and excellent for kids and grown ups alike. The Tea Tree scent is a must-have for any kids in school as it prevents lice ;)
This product is great! We bought it at first to clean my daughter's plagiocephaly helmet and it did a great job getting the stink out of it!! We have continued to buy it after she was out of the helmet! It smells great, awesome lather and leaves baby so smooth!

California Baby Super Sensitive Shampoo & Bodywash

Why not get soft, supple skin AND sunscreen all in one non-toxic product?

  • 100% pure and natural and NO nano particles
  • Organic Oils infuse your skin with moisture & excellent healing properties
  • Packaged in a thick dark violet glass, so no toxic residues can leach into the container when exposed to heat

Amazon Review Quotes

I love the California Baby line of products but this is the one that I always have stocked. My kids have slight eczema but this body wash is gentle enough for everyday use. It smells clean (not chemically) and rinses easily. Also, it doesn't seem to bother their eyes if we get some bubbles on their faces. The pump bottle is easy to use one handed. Worth the price for sensitive skin!
I love this Shampoo and body wash. It says it's no fragrance but it definitely has a light smell to it but not a bad one. I think it makes my kids hair smell nice and works great. It's only a 19oz bottle but I feel like it has lasted forever, which is great.
Love, love California Baby shampoo and body wash. I have been purchasing this since my daughter was 4 months old and now she is 5! Works great for her sensitive skin since she has eczema . . . does not burn her eyes. I tend to use this myself.

Babyganics Shampoo + Body Wash, Fragrance Free

EWG Rating - 1
Fakespot Grade - B

Amazon Review Quotes

Absolutely love the babyganics shampoo... I tried about five other products when my newborn was born with a full head of hair and this was the only thing that didn't leave it greasy in ten minutes
Love this product. As a stylist of over 8 years this is the only stuff that touches my son in a bath. All organic smells good and doesn't bug his eyes. Does not contain numbing agents or other harmful ingredients. Won't cause cradle cap either!
Love babyganics and love foaming soap! My kids (ages 5, 4, 1) find it fun to wash with the foam, so I'm happy to buy it! Nice fragrance. happy with this purchase! =)

Babo Botanicals Moisturizing Baby Shampoo & Wash, Oatmilk Calendula

EWG Rating - 2
Fakespot Grade - B

Another winner with parents for cradle cap, sensitive skin & eczema. Lathers well and has a super nice "baby fresh" scent. Mmmm!  Includes a Certified Organic blend of vitamins & antioxidants, combined with chamomile, watercress, kudzu and calendula.

Amazon Review Quotes

So good for a child with sensitive skin or cradle cap. My daughter had a case of cradle cap and after about two weeks it was practically gone. It also has a nice wonderful scent to it. Baby fresh :)
Great for my daughter's sensitive skin and eczema.
Smells wonderful and lathers well. I like the that the bubbles don't last forever (maybe 15 minutes before they disappear) so a toddler knows when bath time is over. My son has extremely sensitive skin and develops inexplicable rashes periodically. A few baths with this soap and a particularly persistent eczema attack all over his torso cleared up. It even rinsed clean from his hair so we haven't had to use conditioner.

Finally Pure Foaming Baby Wash & Shampoo

EWG Rating - 2
Fakespot Grade - A  Super darn trustworthy Amazon reviews

100% Natural, Pure and Gentle . . . no worries here with your baby's delicate skin and eyes. Finally Pure has an excellent reputation among mom's and dad's who love their products, as well as their customer service. (They replaced one reviewer's product that was stolen from her doorstep on Halloween, no questions asked. Nice!)

Amazon Review Quotes

My son breaks out in hives with every single shampoo except this one. I love how he smells after bath time and it never dries out his skin. I also love how there are none of the chemicals and fragrances most brands put in their baby products.
Cannot say enough good things about Finally Pure! Great products and I don't feel like I'm pumping my son full of chemicals. I use the baby products daily!
Very pure ingredients. Good for an infant 3 months and up. Was a bit too drying for a newborn to use too often so I just bathed him with water and occasionally used soap until he got old enough for bathing every other day. Now that he's past the newborn stage I really like it for the purity.

Exederm Non-Irritating Baby Shampoo

EWG Rating - 2
Fakespot Grade - A  Super trustworthy Amazon reviews

Exederm is a winner with the National Eczema Association (who knew there was such a thing?). Apparently this shampoo won the Seal of Acceptance award with a perfect score of 5/5 for it's ultra sensitive formulation. Parents love what it does for their kiddos' intensive dry scalp issues and more.

NOTE: This is a SHAMPOO ONLY ... Not a body wash combo, as are the rest of the products on this list.

Amazon Review Quotes

My daughter has had dry, flaky scalp issues since she was about 8 months old...chunks of skin would get combed out of her hair every time she had a bath...ever since we started using this shampoo, no more dry, flaky scalp!! This shampoo has been a true, healing God-send!
We have two children with eczema . . . We have been using Exederm for well over a year now and are very happy with it. It does not irritate their scalps and (bonus) does a great job cleaning their hair. Honestly, for cleansing purposes, I prefer it to the regular baby shampoos . . . a little goes a long way. One bottle lasts about two and a half months for our two children.
My young son has eczema and despite improvement continued to have issues on his back. We finally realized it was aggravated by his shampoo and rinsing the suds down his back. We switched to this product with great improvement! It cleans all sorts of messes out of hair, including PB&J. Excellent product- clean scent, lathers nicely, rinses clean, and leaves hair soft and shiny.

Aveeno Baby Wash & Shampoo, Lightly Scented

EWG Rating - 2
Fakespot Grade - A  Super trustworthy Amazon reviews

Natural oat extract is blended into a nice lathering Aveeno baby wash and shampoo. Per one mom, it's got a "clean smell" without being perfume-y. More than reviewer uses it on their own face with no stinging eyes. Nice!

Amazon Review Quotes

Love love love! Doesn't dry out the babes. Gentle on their eyes and skin, no screaming in the bath.
As a first time mom, I only knew about Johnson & Johnson products. So naturally, my initial instinct was to use the Johnson & Johnson baby products I received during my baby shower. I wasn't impressed. My second son didn't respond well to their products and seemed to get a mild rash every time we used it. After some research, we decided to give Aveeno a try. We absolutely loved it. Aveeno has a mild scent and is gentle on his skin. Two years later, I am still using Aveeno products on my son and now on my newborn daughter. It's so gentle, I even use it on my own skin :) love the way it cleanses my face. Here's another little plus...great to wash makeup brushes with!!!
My toddler son has eczema and my 4 year old has sensitive skin to perfumes; we have been using Aveeno for a year and absolutely love it! ... I love the smell. It still gives your child a "clean smell" without being perfume-y. My daughter (and I agree) thinks it is most important that it bubbles (lathers) really well.

Shea Moisture Olive & Marula Baby Head-To-Toe Wash & Shampoo

EWG Rating - 2
Fakespot Grade - B

Apparently the scent of this baby wash & shampoo is the BOMB! Multiple reviewers just adore the scent which one describes as "natural floral from jasmine flowers". Gentle enough for every day use, lathers perfectly and makes curls soft and light.

Amazon Review Quotes

This is my FAVORITE baby shampoo. I bought it on a whim when searching for a natural style shampoo and immediately ADORED the scent. ... Everyone always says the baby smells delicious and want to know what we use! THIS!
Natural floral scent from jasmine flowers. I'm very picky about scents, there is nothing artificial or offensive about this fragrance. I use it on my 2 year old girl as well as myself. It makes her curls soft and light. Works as nice body wash as well.
Awesome scent. I put some in the bath water for my two littles and also use as shampoo and body wash. It's a great smell, lathers perfectly, and helps begin the bedtime wind-down. :-) I love bringing one small bottle on trips for the whole family since it can be used as body soap and shampoo.

Thinkbaby Baby Shampoo and Body Wash

EWG Rating - 2
Fakespot Grade - A  Super trustworthy Amazon reviews

Thinkbaby has a yummy scent that one reviewer calls "almost citrusy" and reminds another reviewer of grapefruit. The formulation is based on whole foods premium care ingredients with scientific expertise. Reviewers love the honest company ethics and, as a side note, Thinkbaby makes one of the most popular sunscreens on the Blissful Miss Natural Sunscreen Guide

Amazon Review Quotes

I have a one year old daughter with very sensitive skin. I got her this product because she is unable to use things that are not all natural as she gets very irritated skin. I love this. It smells great, almost citrusy, and it cleans her hair and skin well. There is no left over residue on her skin and it is left soft. I would recommend this product for anyone looking for an all natural alternative baby wash.
I love the smell and unlike some other brands that are "chemical free" this one actually bubbles!
This soap doesn't burn babies eyes and smells great. It reminds me of grapefruit. We love it, plus it is made with safe ingredients.
